12 Days of Postgres: The Open Source Gift That Keeps On Giving

January 15, 2023

‘Tis the season for giving, celebration and the chance to reflect on everything that’s made 2022 a successful year.

That’s why—with the holidays around the corner—EDB created the “12 Days of Postgres”: a catalog of the dynamic and impactful features that make Postgres the most loved, most wanted and most used database management system (DBMS) among innovators.

As we’ve reached the end of the 12 Days of Postgres, we’ve compiled all of these exciting benefits for you, so we can celebrate the open source database that keeps on giving, together.

1) The new MERGE command

First requested all the way back in November of 2005, the MERGE command has been one of the most frequently suggested additions to PostgreSQL, championed by EDB. Now with Postgres 15, it’s finally here! Making it easier for enterprises to migrate from expensive, legacy databases to open source, this was an early holiday present when Postgres 15 launched this October.

2) Enhanced transformation

Over the last few years, terms like “modernization,” “digital transformation” and “business acceleration” have dominated the aspirations and benchmarks of enterprises big and small. Achieving these goals, boils down to your choice of database. According to experts, no DBMS is better suited to these aims than Postgres.

3) CloudNativePG

In April, EDB was thrilled to witness the culmination of years of hard work and the beginning of a new phase in the multi-decade evolution of Postgres and its community with the release of CloudNativePG. CloudNativePG ensures that everyone can start using an entirely open source stack for Postgres in Kubernetes for all their applications, with all the freedom they demand. It’s the culmination of our vision for Postgres.

4) Remote DBA services

As EDB customer SAS recently told us: “While it’s certainly possible to self-manage Postgres without remote DBAs, if you’re trying to manage a large-scale database or a mission-critical application, you’ll end up spending more money in time, resourcing, and staffing to do it yourself. With them, you get a ready-made product that’s packaged and supported by an enterprise vendor.” With EDB, businesses are able to achieve exactly this!

5) Extreme high availability

For years, Postgres’ reputation for minimal downtime has been key to its popularity. When downtime can cost your organization both revenue and industry standing, you can’t risk unnecessary outages or disruptions in business continuity. Now, with solutions like EDB Postgres Distributed, high availability becomes extreme high availability, providing a database that’s not just reliable, but Always On!

6) Enterprise-grade support

Even the best databases experience issues, even those as powerful as Community PostgreSQL. Luckily, enterprise-grade support provides organizations with the ability to de-risk their database while providing the stability to help them achieve more than they ever thought possible.

7) Fully managed cloud Postgres

With a fully managed cloud database administration is the responsibility of the provider. Companies that use the database don’t have to concern themselves with actually maintaining the database infrastructure, which means they’re free to focus on what really matters: their business, growth and innovation!

8) Developers’ most loved database

Speaking of fully managed cloud Postgres, it’s one of the most frequently cited features among developers who favor Postgres. Because of its flexibility, agility and potential for innovation, Postgres has established itself as The Developer’s Database—the best ally for building ultra-modern, ultra-powerful applications that will do your business and your customers proud.

9) Powerful encryption and security

It seems like every month there’s another story about a database security breach, a PII leak or the mishandling of essential data. This is why Postgres provides organizations with robust, flexible and augmentable security and encryption features. Both Postgres and EDB take the integrity and safety of your assets seriously, and we’re both dedicated to developing new and evolving tools to meet whatever threats you might encounter.

10) Zero vendor lock-in

Open source DBMS like Postgres have experienced a meteoric rise in recent years. One of the key drivers for organizations abandoning legacy commercial databases is restriction. With Postgres, you can own your data and own your future.

11) Oracle-to-Postgres migration

While we’re on the topic of vendor lock-in, that’s one of the main drivers behind more and more organizations saying goodbye to Oracle and making the Postgres move! Armed with the right tools, an Oracle-to-Postgres migration could transform your business.

12) Total control of your infrastructure

We talk a lot about the freedom and control that Postgres offers—and for good reason. It’s what allows your IT managers to manage, your developers to develop and your administrators to administrate. If your data is the engine of your organization, you deserve a database that lets you step on the gas.

Happy holidays from the Postgres leader

Every year, we’re thrilled to hear about the new ways that Postgres has helped enterprises modernize and transform. So, from all of us at EDB, we wish all the great pioneers—in the Postgres community and beyond—a very Happy Holidays.

We’ll see you in 2023, with so much more to deploy and enjoy!
