As the world of technology continues to advance, the open source community sits at the helm of collaboration and innovation. In Q3 2024, EDB PostgreSQL builders and advocates continued to lead the conversation, sharing their expert insights on Postgres, database management, and key open source trends at conferences and meetups around the globe. From optimizing data centers to exploring the future of analytics, the EDB team shared valuable knowledge on how Postgres is shaping the future of data infrastructure.
In Q3 2024 alone, eleven EDB team members participated in ten major events across eight cities in seven countries. These sessions featured thought leaders from EDB, with deep dives into areas such as performance tuning, data processing, and the evolving role of Postgres in the enterprise. Overall, these talks demonstrated Postgres’ strategic value as a powerful, scalable solution for organizations worldwide.
You may have seen our blog post from Q2 2024 highlighting EDB’s open source contributions in 14 countries, 22 cities, and at 24 events, giving 34 talks about Postgres and how to use it in the modern enterprise. Here are the topics that gained greater emphasis in Q3.
Maximizing Postgres Performance
In Q3 at events around the world, EDB experts highlighted how PostgreSQL can be optimized for the enterprise and beyond—across diverse environments, from enterprise data centers to high-performance analytics workflows. At conferences like the PostgreSQL China Technical Conference and EuroPython 2024, Bruce Momjian, EDB VP and Postgres Evangelist, spoke about how to maximize Postgres’ scalability, performance, and versatility.
Bruce discussed strategies for centralizing Postgres in data centers and optimizing Python/PostgreSQL integration, helping developers and DBAs build scalable, high-performance applications. The content reinforced Postgres’ adaptability for both large-scale operations and specialized workflows, solidifying its position as a powerful, flexible database solution for the future.
Also in Q3, EDB speakers showcased Postgres’ advanced features and performance optimization across key events globally. At the Berlin PostgreSQL User Group, EDB Principal Engineer Devrim Gunduz highlighted lesser-known features that boost performance, security, and scalability for advanced users and DBAs. At PGDay Lowlands, EDB Senior Manager, Solution Architects Boriss Mejías shared database efficiency best practices, while EDB Practice Leader Lætitia Avrot addressed user frustrations with strategies to enhance the Postgres experience.
At PGDay UK 2024, Dave Page, EDB Senior Database Architect, focused on Postgres tooling, sharing best practices for performance optimization and accessibility for all users. He also dedicated PGDay UK 2024 to the memory of friend and colleague, Simon Riggs, in his opening remarks. EDB Principal Engineer Devrim Gunduz explored advanced Postgres features, offering strategies for performance tuning and scalability, aimed at users and DBAs looking to optimize their Postgres environments.
These sessions underscored how Postgres can be fine-tuned for both technical efficiency and smoother day-to-day operations—a versatile solution for scaling organizations.
EDB Postgres leaders also showcased Postgres’ growing role in analytics and data processing this past quarter at key events. At PGDay Hyderabad, former EDB Principal Software Engineer ManagerAshutosh Bapat demonstrated how Postgres can be optimized for complex analytics workloads, offering real-world examples of organizations using it for business intelligence and advanced analytics.
Meanwhile, at PGConf NYC 2024, Bruce Momjian and EDB Senior SDE Mark Wong addressed Postgres lock management, sharing strategies to improve concurrency and system performance. Again, these sessions emphasized Postgres’ versatility and undeniability as the database of choice for both high-performance processing and analytics.
Unlocking Open Source Innovation
Another key theme covered in our Q3 talks was expanding Postgres’ reach with database diversity. At COSCUP 2024 in Taiwan, Richard Yen, EDB Principal Engineer, demonstrated Postgres’ versatility in multi-database environments. In his first session, “How to Ride Elephants Safely: Working with Postgres When Your DBA is Not Around,” Richard offered practical advice for non-DBA users and smaller teams to manage Postgres confidently without sacrificing performance.
In his second session, Richard explored PostgreSQL Foreign Data Wrappers (FDWs), which enable seamless integration with other databases, enhancing interoperability and extending Postgres’ capabilities in diverse environments. These talks showcased Postgres’ ability to operate in complex ecosystems while maintaining reliability and performance.
At the 2024 Belgrade DataFusion Meetup, EDB Principal Engineer Artjoms Iškovs and Senior Staff SDE Marko Grujic discussed Apache DataFusion, an innovative open source project advancing scalable data processing. They highlighted how DataFusion's architecture enhances data interoperability, allowing seamless integration and processing across multiple platforms. This capability is essential for data engineers and analysts looking to streamline workflows and scale analytics systems.
The session underscored how open source technologies are driving innovation in data management, a field EDB continues to lead, helping organizations effectively manage and analyze their data in complex environments.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Open Source
As we enter the final quarter of 2024, the demand for scalable, flexible, and high-performing database solutions continues to rise. Postgres remains at the forefront, offering businesses the tools to optimize data management, enhance analytics workflows, and support diverse use cases. With our experts around the globe speaking on important trends and innovations in performance tuning, database optimization, and Postgres integrations, EDB continues to lead the charge.
At EDB, we are committed to advancing open source Postgres and nurturing a collaborative community. With upcoming conferences like PGConf.EU, PostgreSQL Asia, and FOSDEM, we look forward to engaging discussions on the latest database management trends. Make sure to follow us for updates on upcoming events, webinars, and workshops as we continue to build the future of Postgres and data!
