Preview EDB’s sponsored talks at PGConf.EU 2024
The AI revolution is already underway. The market for AI products and services could reach between $780 billion and $990 billion by 2027. As the pace of digital transformation accelerates, everyone from DBAs to business executives are looking to understand how these disruptions will reshape the technology sector, and the global economy as a whole.
89% of large companies around the world have at least begun implementing digital and AI transformation in their business. But the work is far from done. Studies show they have only captured 31% of the expected revenue lift and 25% of expected cost savings from embracing digital transformation.
EDB Postgres AI solves common enterprise challenges by extending enterprise-grade Postgres with native AI vector processing, an analytics lakehouse, and a unified platform for observability and hybrid data management. Leveraging the power of data will be the critical advantage for businesses looking to stay ahead of the curve in the AI generation.
EDB is proud to be a platinum sponsor at PGConf.EU 2024. EDB VP, Chief Architect, Database Servers Peter Eisentraut will give a keynote titled “Postgres Over the Horizon: Anchor Points for the Future We Should Be Building Now”. The focus of the keynote will be the continued evolution of Postgres, shifting beyond transactional capabilities to encompass expanded roles for AI and advanced analytics workloads. Plus, our EDB Postgres experts are exploring the horizons of Postgres in two informative and insightful sponsor talks this year, giving you a glimpse into the future of open source, and what we’re building with Postgres to support the workloads of the future.
Here’s a preview of our sponsor talks:
Postgres: From Cloud to Hybrid and On-Prem Again
Presented by EDB VP, Chief Architect of Kubernetes Gabriele Bartolini, and EDB Technical Fellow Marc Linster
The rise of operators like CloudNativePG is transforming Postgres deployments in Kubernetes, providing flexibility for running databases across VMs or bare metal, with dedicated storage for high-performance needs. This open source stack—combining Kubernetes, Postgres, and CloudNativePG—also aligns with the European Union's Data Act, which requires service providers to guarantee data portability and facilitate switching between vendors.
In this talk, EDB VP, Chief Architect of Kubernetes Gabriele Bartolini will explore how organizations are evolving the way they run Postgres databases in Kubernetes, leveraging CloudNativePG, the open source and openly governed operator founded by EDB.
Joining Gabriele on stage, EDB Technical Fellow Marc Linster will highlight the opportunities this shift presents for PostgreSQL DBAs. By embracing this evolutionary change DBAs can retain full control of their data again, including on-premises.
Postgres Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) solutions offered by leading cloud providers remain popular choices, largely due to the shortage of DBA skills. While DBaaS simplifies database management, it introduces trade-offs, including technological lock-in, challenges with data portability, and difficulties in switching cloud providers without downtime.
Meanwhile, organizations with strong DBA expertise have provisioned Postgres on virtual machines within cloud environments. These setups automate database deployment using configuration management tools that efficiently handle Day 1 operations. However, unpredictable costs and the need for cost optimization are driving businesses to explore alternatives that prioritize freedom, portability, and standardization, ultimately avoiding vendor lock-in.
Kubernetes, an open-source platform, enables organizations to build highly portable infrastructures that are adaptable across private, public, hybrid, and multi-cloud environments, managing both Day 1 and Day 2 operations. On-premise Kubernetes deployments, including on bare metal, are gaining popularity, reversing the cloud-only trend and opening the door to hybrid architectures.
Don’t miss this opportunity to gain key insights from EDB’s top Kubernetes expert. Gabriele will also be leading a Kubernetes-focused training session at PGConf.EU along with EDB Principal Engineer Leonardo Cecchi titled "Mastering PostgreSQL in Kubernetes with CloudNativePG.” The session is designed to empower PostgreSQL DBAs by bridging the gap between their domain expertise and the world of Kubernetes.
Integrating AI with Postgres: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Possibilities
Presented by EDB Machine Learning Engineer Bilge Ince
It wasn’t long ago that AI was considered a niche topic of interest reserved for researchers and academics. But as AI/ML engineers with extensive research backgrounds entered the industry, AI transitioned from a specialized area of study to a widely adopted and influential technology. Today, everyone’s talking about AI–from software engineers and cybersecurity analysts to linguists, front-end engineers, and the world at large.
In this session, EDB Machine Learning Engineer Bilge Ince explores the seamless integration of AI within PostgreSQL. Discover how AI-driven enhancements like the aidb extension and pgvector transform PostgreSQL from a traditional database into an intelligent system. Bilge’s talk will explore how AI is transforming Postgres, offering a preview of the future directions for integrating AI with this powerful database technology. Plus, attendees will gain practical insights for leveraging AI within your data infrastructure using PostgreSQL.
The transformative potential of the aidb extension brings AI capabilities directly into PostgreSQL. By integrating AI with PostgreSQL, organizations can unlock the full potential of their data—a massive opportunity for business acceleration. This talk promises to be a comprehensive exploration of AI's potential within database management, offering valuable insights for DBAs and IT leaders keen on leveraging these technologies.
This talk will also explore a number of hot topics in the AI world such as vectors, semantic search, vector arithmetic, LLMs, and multimodals.
A crucial aspect of AI and machine learning, vectors represent data points in a multi-dimensional space. Bilge’s talk delves into the role of vectors in AI and how they facilitate complex data interactions. Understanding the nuances of semantic search and vector arithmetic is essential for effective AI implementation. The session will explore how these concepts allow for more accurate and context-aware search capabilities, revolutionizing data retrieval processes. And if you’re curious about the role of LLMs and their interaction with vector data in Postgres, this talk will delve into how Large Language Models (LLMs) and multimodal approaches are reshaping the way we interact with data. The discussion will also cover the technical intricacies of these models and their interplay with vector data in PostgreSQL, showcasing how they enhance user experiences and insights.
As a Machine Learning Engineer at EDB, Bilge Ince brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the data and AI community. This session at PGCOnf.EU promises to be an enlightening experience for anyone interested in the convergence of AI and database technology. Bilge is also leading an AI-focused training session at PGCOnf.EU along with EDB Manager, Solutions Architects Boriss Mejias. The workshop, Empowering AI Applications: Integrating Vector Databases with PostgreSQL, aims to help developers build new AI capabilities through problem-solving. Don’t miss these valuable opportunities to explore how PostgreSQL can be leveraged to enhance data management and support advanced AI applications. As we continue to navigate the complexities of AI, understanding these integrations will be essential for driving innovation and achieving strategic goals.
