A Day in the Life: Inside a Principal Sales Engineer Role at EDB
In the fast-paced world of enterprise software, connecting cutting-edge database technology to real-world business challenges requires deep technical expertise and a passion for continuous learning.
In our “A Day in the Life” series, we explore the essential roles and individuals making an impact at EDB. This time we chat with Rohan Singh, principal sales engineer, to learn how he leads field engineering initiatives across the APAC region, the importance of staying ahead in the tech landscape, and why a culture with “zero egos” makes EDB “one of the happiest places” to advance your career.
A day in the life: Solving complex technical challenges
For Rohan, the core of the principal sales engineer role centers on technical problem-solving and customer impact. He describes his typical day simply but powerfully: “Working on interesting problems with a range of customers and prospects.”
To thrive in the dynamic database sector, Rohan emphasizes that an appetite for growth is essential. EDB is constantly evolving, and its engineering teams stay at the forefront by continuously building new skills. “EDB is an amazing place to work on cutting-edge database technology,” he says. “To thrive at EDB, we need to be willing to learn and keep up with the fast pace of development. In return, EDB provides a good work environment with fantastic colleagues and management and plenty of training opportunities.”
The engineering mindset: Leading the Kubernetes motion
Beyond his core responsibilities, Rohan is a proactive leader who steps up to elevate his entire region. Driven by his passion for cloud-native technologies, he took on regional leadership for one of his favorite products.
When asked about his most impactful initiative, Rohan points to “leading the Kubernetes SME for the field engineering team for APAC.” Earning his Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) certification gave him the foundation to shape regional go-to-market strategies: “This was a fantastic way to showcase my skills and recent CKA certification and it allowed me to progress our go-to-market with my favorite product.”
Impact beyond the region: A collaborative, no-ego culture
When discussing what makes working at EDB unique, Rohan points directly to the flat, open organizational structure. It is a workplace where technical expertise is shared freely and leaders are accessible at every level.
“Super collaborative and no egos or hierarchy—I can talk to a VP or exec any time,” Rohan explains. He notes that this supportive environment is intentionally built through EDB’s hiring philosophy: “The goal-driven culture and positive culture. We hire people who value a collaborative mindset.”
Culture and perks: Growth and daily satisfaction
Ultimately, the combination of exciting technical challenges, management support, and a highly accessible leadership team creates an environment where team members genuinely enjoy showing up every day.
As Rohan summarizes: “EDB is one of the happiest places I’ve had to work at.”
