Accelerate Oracle-to-Postgres transitions and modernize legacy apps with new Data Migration Service, Oracle Estate Migration Assessment, and more
This blog was co-authored by Matthew Lewandowski and Tim Boutin.
Global enterprise and government customers have long realized the fastest on-ramp to modernizing legacy databases and accelerating application innovation is provided by EDB.
The Oracle migration tools enhancements incorporated in EDB Postgres 17, as well as the Oracle compatibility features delivered by EDB Postgres Advanced Server (EPAS), are foundational to our newly released EDB Postgres AI Software Deployment and Hybrid Control Plane functionality.
Let’s dive into how these new features increase the value of EDB Postgres AI in assuring successful Oracle-to-Postgres migrations, as well as delivering database automation and “single pane of glass” management and observability across hybrid data estates capabilities in our Hybrid Control Plane.
EDB Postgres AI Migration tools certified to support EPAS 17 and PostgreSQL 17 releases
EDB Postgres 17 support for EPAS 17 and PostgreSQL 17 enables users to migrate to the latest version of Postgres and leverage the new capabilities it provides. EDB Migration Portal and EDB*Plus have been certified to work with EPAS 17 and Migration Toolkit, Replication Server, and LiveCompare have been certified to work with both EPAS 17 and PostgreSQL 17.
EDB Migration Tools | Released Versions |
Migration Portal with AI Copilot (EPAS 17 only) | 4.12.0 |
Migration Toolkit | 55.10.0 |
Replication Server | 7.10.0 |
LiveCompare | 3.0.2 |
EDB*Plus | 41.3.0 |
EDB’s migration tools are also certified to support migrating databases to EDB Postgres AI Cloud Service.
All supported software with Break/Fix entitlement has already completed certification with PostgreSQL, ensuring optimal compatibility and accelerated adoption by EDB customers.
Securing and automating self-managed database Oracle and Postgres transitions with EDB Data Migration Service and Data Sync in Hybrid Control Plane
The EDB Data Migration Service (DMS) data sync functionality is an essential element in the EDB Hybrid Control Plane, enabling customers to migrate Oracle and Postgres data from on-premises and cloud environments to EDB Postgres AI managed Postgres database clusters.
After performing an initial data snapshot, source database row changes are replicated to the migration destination using change data capture (or CDC) and event streaming. Operators can select a subset of their schemas' tables to migrate, including support for table and column name remapping.
The EDB Data Migration Service in the Cloud Service also provides EDB Postgres® AI Analytics sync replication functionality. EPAS and Postgres source database snapshots are transformed into Data Lake format in CSP Object Storage.

Simplifying Oracle-to-Postgres migration assessments in Hybrid Control Plane
EDB’s new Oracle Estate Migration Assessment feature in EDB Postgres AI Software Deployment’s Hybrid Control Plane solves a problem DBAs encounter all too often:
“How do you prioritize which database to migrate first when you have 100+ Oracle databases distributed across multiple data centers?”
The Oracle Estate Migration Assessment feature streamlines the process by giving DBAs quick insight into migration complexity and level of effort in order to prioritize the most impactful migration targets. Identifying and pursuing the easiest migrations first can help build momentum and internal competency which is needed to migrate a substantial set of an organization's Oracle applications.
In this initial release, the solution will support the assessment of migrating Oracle databases to EPAS. The assessment categorizes the complexity of migrating each Oracle database registered with the Hybrid Control Plane and provides an estimated migration level of effort for each.
Figure 1. With clear insights into migration complexity, the Oracle Migration Estate Assessment empowers architects to make informed decisions and plans on their enterprise database transformation journey. This can lead to up to 80% TCO improvement.
EDB Migration Portal and AI Copilot deployed in your environment
EDB Migration Portal is now available in the Hybrid Control Plane, enabling customers to deploy a centralized management and automation solution “single pane of glass” management and observability across hybrid data estates. Providing the flexibility to deploy EDB Migration Portal on Hybrid Control Plane on-premises or in the cloud addresses customer data security and confidentiality concerns, with Oracle database schema data remaining within their controlled environment.
In addition, the AI Copilot, which uses Azure AI by default, can be configured to use other OpenAI-compatible LLMs, including locally hosted LLMs if desired. This provides a similar benefit as making the Migration Portal available in customer-owned environments.
Additional EDB Migration Tools Updates
As part of the EDB Postgres 17, EDB upgraded Migration Toolkit, EDB Postgres Replication Server (EPRS) to support EPAS 17 and PostgreSQL 17, with LiveCompare supporting EPAS 17, PostgreSQL 17, and Postgres Enterprise Server 17.
Additional updates of EDB’s migration tools include the following highlights:
- Migration Toolkit includes improved and consistent handling of migrating computed columns across the various supported source and target database combinations, other minor enhancements, and bug fixes
- Replication Server offers support for the improved handling of computed columns introduced with Migration Toolkit, other minor enhancements, and bug fixes.
- EDB*Plus introduces a few minor enhancements requested by customers, as well as bug fixes.
- LiveCompare updates include bug fixes.
Summary
EDB’s Oracle migration tools, expertise, and support enable EDB customers to migrate many Oracle databases in less than 20 days, reduce app rewrites up to 95%, and realize 80% in TCO savings versus Oracle licensing.
Our latest Oracle migration tools advance these capabilities, as well as deliver Oracle Estate Migration Assessments, Migration Portal with AI Copilot, and Oracle to Postgres data migration functionality directly within the new Hybrid Control Plane.
