A behind the scenes look at Bruce Momjian’s Postgres travels

EDB is committed to advancing Postgres expertise within the open-source community, and no one embodies this commitment more than Bruce Momjian, EDB’s Vice President and Postgres Evangelist. Bruce recently completed a multi-week tour across Europe and EMEA, delivering insights on Postgres and AI, engaging with developers, and strengthening global collaboration around Postgres. Here’s a recap of his journey and the impact of EDB’s thought leadership in the Postgres ecosystem.

Prague: AI in the Trenches

Bruce kicked off his tour in Prague on January 28 by giving his training session, Databases in the AI Trenches at Prague PostgreSQL Developer Day. This deep dive into AI and Postgres covered everything from discriminative machine learning to generative AI, vector search, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). The session concluded with a hands-on pgvector lab, which was well received by attendees.

The feedback from the training session was highly positive. Many attendees shared that while they had a partial understanding of AI prior to the session, Bruce’s tutorial provided them with a much-needed comprehensive perspective.

Prague PostgreSQL Developer Day is a valuable opportunity for us to connect with Postgres enthusiasts. Bruce shares that during the conference he enjoyed the opportunity to engage in discussions on benchmarking methods, and he particularly enjoyed hearing an insightful talk by Dirk Krautschick from Aiven titled Benchmarking - An unexpected Journey

As Prague PostgreSQL Developer Day wrapped up, Bruce traveled to Brussels for the next leg of his journey.

Brussels: PostgreSQL Developer Meeting & FOSDEM PGDay

On January 30, Bruce attended the PostgreSQL Developer Meeting at FOSDEM PGDay 2025. This full-day event saw robust participation from developers worldwide, reinforcing the strength and innovation within the Postgres community.

FOSDEM PGDay on January 31 brought 120+ attendees together for a dedicated conference focused entirely on Postgres. Bruce noted that the small size of this event fostered a collaborative environment for engaging hallway conversations that are often difficult to have at larger conferences. This day-long meeting underscored the importance of having focused Postgres discussions before the broader FOSDEM event.

At FOSDEM (February 1-2), Bruce closed out the main conference track with Databases in the AI Trenches, delivering an extended 52-minute presentation followed by a Q&A session. Attendees praised the talk for clarifying the role of Postgres in generative AI. The Postgres room at FOSDEM was notably large, helping to alleviate previous overflow issues, allowing for an inclusive and engaging experience.

Berlin & Istanbul: Community Meetups

Following FOSDEM, Bruce traveled to Berlin, where he spoke at the PG Meetup on February 4, delivering his AI-focused talk once again to an engaged audience. The event seamlessly blended knowledge-sharing with networking, reinforcing EDB’s commitment to community-driven learning.

After a brief personal visit to Istanbul, Bruce continued his journey, heading to Saudi Arabia for the LEAP conference.

Riyadh: LEAP Conference & Open Source Advocacy

On February 10, Bruce joined the EDB team at LEAP, one of the largest tech events in the region. He participated in a high-profile interview with EDB partner Redington, discussing how open-source technologies can drive digital transformation in Saudi Arabia. More than 20,000 attendees explored the expo halls, and Bruce spent time at the EDB booth, connecting with Postgres users and customers.

On February 11, he delivered a concise 15-minute version of Will Postgres Live Forever? at the Redington booth, further highlighting Postgres’ resilience and future potential.

Amsterdam: Strengthening Postgres Community Ties

Bruce then traveled to Amsterdam, where he visited customers alongside the EDB sales team before attending the Netherlands PG Meetup on February 13. With multiple talks, a lightning session, and plenty of networking over pizza, the event had a vibrant and energetic atmosphere.

On February 14, an attendee from Bruce’s FOSDEM talk invited him to present Databases in the AI Trenches to their employees, demonstrating the growing demand for AI knowledge in the Postgres community.

Before heading home on February 15, Bruce participated in a breakfast meeting with Postgres community members to discuss the future of Postgres, particularly the idea of separating storage and compute—an emerging topic with significant implications for the database’s evolution.

EDB’s Commitment to Postgres Leadership

Bruce Momjian’s journey through Europe and the Middle East exemplifies EDB’s dedication to fostering innovation, education, and collaboration within the Postgres community. From AI deep dives and developer discussions to open-source advocacy and customer engagement, EDB continues to lead the charge in empowering Postgres users worldwide.

EDB remains committed to advancing Postgres innovation, ensuring that knowledge and expertise are shared across the global open-source community.
