Previewing EDB’s training session for PGConf.EU 2024, presented by our Kubernetes experts
EDB is committed to advancing PostgreSQL by sharing our expertise and insights, especially as the landscape of database management continues to evolve to meet the needs of future workloads. Two of EDB’s Postgres and Kubernetes experts will be sharing their knowledge with the open-source community in a training session at PostgreSQLConference Europe 2024. EDB VP, Chief Architect of Kubernetes Gabriele Bartolini and EDB Principal Engineer Leonardo Cecchi will lead a session, titled "Mastering PostgreSQL in Kubernetes with CloudNativePG," which is designed to empower PostgreSQL DBAs by bridging the gap between their domain expertise and the world of Kubernetes.
Understanding Kubernetes for PostgreSQL DBAs
In just two years since its open source launch, CloudNativePG—EDB’s Kubernetes operator for Postgres—has climbed past early leaders like Zalando and CrunchyData, racking up more than 4,300 stars on GitHub to become the world’s most popular PostgreSQL operator.
As organizations increasingly adopt Kubernetes for application deployment, PostgreSQL DBAs find themselves at a crossroads. Many may feel apprehensive about this shift, viewing Kubernetes as a potential threat to their roles. However, Gabriele and Leo aim to help change this potentially negative perception, emphasizing that Kubernetes represents a significant opportunity for DBAs to expand their skill set and enhance their career longevity.
In this hands-on training, participants will delve into the fundamentals of Kubernetes, focusing on its application in managing PostgreSQL databases. By simulating a multi-region Kubernetes setup on their laptop with CNPG Playground, attendees will gain practical experience with concepts such as high availability, backups, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies across different clusters.
A Hands-On Approach to Learning
One of the standout features of this training is its hands-on format. Participants will work directly on their laptops to simulate real-world scenarios, such as disaster recovery operations between regions. This interactive approach will help reinforce learning and inspire confidence in using Kubernetes for application deployment.
The goal of this training session is to demystify Kubernetes for PostgreSQL professionals and equip them with the skills they need to thrive in this new environment.
Bridging the Knowledge Gap
A key focus of the session is to help PostgreSQL DBAs understand the benefits of becoming 'T-shaped' professionals. While they already possess deep expertise in PostgreSQL, the goal is to begin a journey that will equip them with enough knowledge of Kubernetes to effectively communicate and collaborate with Kubernetes experts within their organizations. This cross-functional teamwork is essential in today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape, where database and infrastructure teams must work in harmony.
By fostering this understanding, we hope to alleviate the concerns DBAs might have regarding the adoption of Kubernetes. Rather than feeling sidelined, they can emerge as integral contributors to their organizations’ cloud-native strategies.
Unlock new possibilities with Kubernetes
EDB is proud to be an active member of the vibrant open-source community, and we are committed to sharing our Postgres expertise at events around the world. EDB is looking forward to connecting and engaging with the PostgreSQL community at PGConf.EU this year. By hosting sessions like "Mastering PostgreSQL in Kubernetes with CloudNativePG," we reaffirm our dedication to not only supporting PostgreSQL users but also enhancing the overall data ecosystem, and building Postgres beyond transactional workloads to support analytical, and new AI applications. Together, we can embrace the future of database management, turning challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation.
