Oracle Migration Webinar Recap Part 3: EDB Customer Success Stories

November 07, 2022

In Part 1 of our Oracle Migration webinar series, we talked about why developers are abandoning Oracle for Postgres. In Part 2, we covered tools that make migrations easier.

In the third and final part of the series (viewable on-demand), EDB’s Performance Engineering and Architecture Team VP, Vibhor Kumar and Solutions Architecture VP, Gianni Ciolli present real-life migration success stories, demonstrating how three different EDB customers successfully migrated from Oracle to Postgres to reduce costs, increase flexibility and empower innovation.

Here are some of our key takeaways:

A marquee pharma corporation adopts a “from Oracle to zero” policy and saves big

One of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world had over 50,000 employees, more than 27 research and development sites across the globe and $20+ billion in revenue.

To cut their massive IT spending, the organization adopted an initiative which would reduce their Oracle database and application usage to zero, and migrate all of their applications to Community Postgres.

EDB’s Migration Portal provided visibility into the enterprise’s essential migration needs while the compatibility index showed that their Oracle database and applications were 80% compatible with Postgres Advanced Server

Because the pharmaceutical leader wanted assistance in defining their migration strategy, they turned to EDB’s Solutions Architecture Team, who helped them migrate quickly to EDB Postgres Advanced Server, offering expertise, tools and services to reduce the cost and the risk of migrating. Their successful migration ultimately saved the business millions of dollars in total cost of ownership (TCO) of their database service operations.

A global networking and telecommunications company meets increased digital demands with a scalable platform

The next success story featured a well-known seller of infrastructure, software and services to telecommunications service providers and enterprises as well as Internet Protocol (IP) and optical transport systems.

In order to retain their competitive edge, this organization needed to efficiently support and process a growing amount of content, with which their legacy Oracle database system simply could not keep pace. They knew that upgrading their environment would result in higher expenses due to the Oracle’s exorbitant license fees and maintenance costs.

The telecommunications company began exploring alternatives to Oracle that offered scalability, efficiency and performance at a lower cost. When they made the decision to migrate to Postgres, the company chose EDB because of proven performance database compatibility with legacy systems.

When EDB’s Migration Portal showed that the compatibility of their Oracle database schema with EDB Postgres Advanced Server was around 90 to 95%, this confirmed that EDB Postgres Advanced Server was the right choice, minimizing migration risks and infrastructural changes. EDB solutions also allowed them to run in a Kubernetes environment and build a high-performing, scalable and low-cost platform that met customers’ increasing demands and grew their base.

A leading clinical system provider opens the door to innovation with Postgres and EDB

The subject of our final success story offers digital healthcare and IT solutions for medical care and billing to a wide range of hospitals. Oracle limited their growth and scalability, and they aimed to eliminate these technological restrictions by adopting Postgres in the cloud.

Just like the other companies featured in this webinar, this clinical systems provider started the migration themselves. They used EDB’s Migration Portal to evaluate the compatibility of their applications with EDB Postgres Advanced Server. They then reached out to EDB for help in defining their migration journey and the services they wanted to create around Postgres.

EDB helped the enterprise migrate from Oracle and automate and scale their system with EDB Postgres Advanced Server. We also helped them to achieve extreme high availability, with a flexible architecture that enabled them to choose four 9s or five 9s as needed.

EDB supports every stage of your migration journey

“How long does it take to migrate and rewrite?” one attendee asked at the end of the webinar. While the answer to this varies by use case, Kumar mentioned that companies who tap into EDB’s knowledge, skill sets and migration processes are able to migrate to Postgres very quickly, their migration effort reduced by 50%.

In wrapping up, Kumar noted that all three customers featured in the success stories approached migration similarly. First, each company initiated their migration on their own. Second, all three companies used EDB tools like the Migration Portal to assess how much effort would be needed to migrate from Oracle to Postgres.

EDB can provide as much or as little migration support as needed. We’re here for you and your needs—to help you achieve your goal of migrating from Oracle and to experience all the benefits of Postgres.
